DID YOU KNOW...

There are some names or people in the Bible that we don't know much about - one such person is Jabez. His name means 'Pain'. We do know that he was more honorable than his brothers and he cried out to God! In his prayer, he recognized God as the one and only true God. He wanted his spiritual territory to increase for the impact of the kingdom of God. Jabez wanted God to be in every moment of his day and he wanted God to keep him from evil so that he might not cause pain. We know that God granted his request! PRAISE THE LORD! Where can you find this prayer? 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 CHECK IT OUT!

WHAT IS PRAYER?

Prayer is talking to God. It is a conversation with God. It is our fiercest weapon against the enemy and all things in this fallen world. Through prayer, you seek God's face and His hand. When you seek God's face, it's about a relationship with Him. When you seek His hand, it's about seeing results in prayer. The God to whom we pray is the all-powerful Creator. He is able to intervene in our lives. God is a loving Father. He cares about our needs and He cares about our concerns.

Consistent prayer releases the power of God's blessings on our lives and circumstances. Matthew 6:6 says But you, when you pray, go into your room and shut the door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

My hope is that you will have a life of prayer each and every day and that you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ making Him your Lord and Savior! Rev. Yvonne Pettiford

Let's look at four types of prayers:

  1. Thanksgiving/Gratitude: - God is the source of all of our blessings. When you pray to Him, give Him thanks for all that you receive. James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

  2. Worship/Praise: - Prayer is an act of worship! Worship is the act of reverence or adoration for God. Praise Him with your whole heart. Praise Him for who He is - that He is Almighty God. Tell Him that you love Him and adore Him! Psalm 9:1 I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart...

  3. Confession/Admission: When we confess, we admit our guilt. Ask God for forgiveness and to help you follow His teachings. I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Pray for God to give you a clean heart. Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

  4. Petition/Request: God wants us to come to Him with our petitions and requests - in other words asking Him for something. Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. God takes seriously the requests of His children. Our prayers should not be for selfish gain. James 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

The Power of Prayer

The power of prayer isn't a magic formula, key words or in the person praying. It's about an open heart that is humble and filled with awe and adoration of who our Almighty God is - the power resides in the God who is being prayed to - THE ONE AND ONLY LIVING GOD!

Prayer brings about change through God's power. James 5:16 The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Prayer breaks the chains of... addictions, unforgiveness in our hearts, depression, loneliness, anger issues, hatred, bitterness, worries, and fears. Psalm 34:4 I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears. Ask the Lord to deliver you from whatever holds you in bondage, casting all your cares, worries, doubts upon Him. I Peter 5:7 ...casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

God wants to have a relationship with you - we do this through prayer! He wants you to come to Him and talk with Him each and every day! He wants to bless you and to keep you in His perfect peace, and guard your heart and your mind through Christ Jesus. This is the power of prayer! Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made know to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Whatever walk of life you come from - whatever you are going through - you can go to God in prayer with... thanksgiving and gratitude; worship and praise; confession and admission; petitions and requests. God loves you and wants a relationship with you!

I John 5:14-15 Now this is the confidence we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus,

died for my sins and now I want to turn from my sins. I confess

with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that You

raised Him from the dead. I invite Jesus Christ to come into my

life as my personal Savior. Thank you Jesus for dying for my

sins and giving me the gift of eternal life. Amen.
