DID YOU KNOW...

There are some people in the Bible that don't get much recognition or we don't know their names - one such person is The Thief on the Cross! We know that he was a criminal - he was crucified next to Jesus - He was brought into paradise at his death. There was a conversation between Christ and the two criminals crucified alongside Him. The first criminal mocked Jesus. The other criminal, of whom this writing is about, defended Jesus in a humble manner and acknowledged the innocence of Christ, and responded to the mocker letting him know that they deserved their punishments, but Jesus Christ did nothing wrong.

Because of his response to Jesus on the cross, the thief received eternal salvation!

Where can you find this story? Luke 23:32-43 CHECK IT OUT!

Why Jesus Died on the Cross

  1. Jesus died and arose to prove He was the Son of God. Jesus had predicted His death and resurrection. Luke 9:22 "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day." After Jesus rose from the grave, the Bible says that Jesus appeared to many people over a period of 40 days. Acts 1:3 ...to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. He was alive, back walking around Jerusalem!

  2. He died and arose to pay for our sins. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Somebody has to pay for the sins in our lives. Either you go to hell or someone pays for your sins to get you to heaven. There is a price to be paid for our sins. There is a saying 'you do the crime, you do the time'. The good news is Jesus said that He would do it: He would pay for our sins. On the cross Jesus paid for everyone of our sins.

  3. He died on the cross and rose again so we would be acceptable to God. God lives in a perfect sinless place. God is perfect and holy and we are not. So how will God allow people who are not perfect to live in a perfect place? It is through the cross of Jesus. An exchange took place on that cross. God came up with a plan to take imperfect people and make them perfect in His sight. We will never be good enough to get to heaven. When we believe in the cross and resurrection God accepts us and declares us not guilty no matter who we are and what we have done. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. God made us a deal, Jesus will take your sins and give you eternal life in exchange. That is how you become acceptable to God - by believing in Jesus' death and resurrection. Jesus died on the cross and arose again so you would be acceptable to God.

  4. He saved us by His Grace. Grace is giving us what we need, not what we deserve. Being saved is a gift from God, not the result of anything that we can do. Romans 8:2-4 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteousness requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. It is believing in Jesus, accepting God's grace, a free gift from God. He died and arose from the dead to show you His grace.

  5. Jesus died and arose to release us from the judgment. Jesus covers your sins when you believe in Him. When you trust in Jesus Christ, God the Father forgives you. God is love and love keeps no records of wrongs. If you put your trust in Jesus Christ, you are released from the judgement. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

  6. Jesus died and arose to show us God's purpose for our lives. You were made by God for God. It is not about you; it is all about God. You were made for a far greater purpose than to live for yourself. It is in Christ that we find out who we are and our purpose for living. When you discover who Jesus is and who you are in Christ, you will be free. You will have resurrection life and purpose - a far better life than any you have ever had before. Just living a good life isn't good enough. You don't need the good life, you need the resurrection life. You need Christ at the center of your life. Jesus died on the cross and arose from the dead to show God's purpose for your life. Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

  7. He died and arose to give us eternal life. Most people like receiving gifts. A gift is only good if you open it and receive it. We need to open God's gift of eternal life and receive it. Jesus died and arose to give you eternal life. Romans 6:23 ... the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. By accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Savior you receive the gift of eternal life.

  8. Jesus died and arose to show His amazing love to you. He laid His life down for you, so that you may have eternal life through Him. John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. No one else has died and arose again for you - only JESUS!

Romans 10:9 ...that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
